How Do Contact Lenses Work?

Contact lenses, are a very small thin piece of plastic. The plastic that is used for contact lenses is made partly with water. This very thin piece of plastic allows you to see without the use of glasses, if you are vision impaired.

While the contact lenses will basically do the same job as eyeglasses, they are some what different in form. Contact lenses are made to fit over the cornea of your eye, and correct your vision. Because anyone who has impaired vision has different strengths and weaknesses in their eyes, an eye exam will let your optometrist know what strength of contact lenses you need to correct your vision. While most people can wear contact lenses, there are some that cannot. Someone who is very sensitive in the eye area, will not be able to physically put up with a contact lens in their eye.

When you visit your optometrist, let him know that you are wanting to be fitted for contact lenses. Your eye doctor will then measure your eye, and take an eye exam for the best results. Your exam will let your optometrist know what prescription or strength of contact lenses you need. The measurements of your eyes will let your eye doctor know what size contact lenses will fit your eyes.

Because your contact lenses are made for your particular eyes, you may have to have a different prescription for each eye. Meaning that when you remove your contact lens from your eyes, you should take care not to mix up which one is for which eye.

Before you leave your optometrist office, they will show you how to insert the contact lens onto your cornea, and how to remove it. This will help you when you get home, because there really is a right and a wrong way to do this.

Simply put, contact lenses work because they are so close to your eye. They are mainly held onto the eye with the film that is on your eye, and of course with help from your eyelids. However, having a contact lens fall out of your eye suddenly, is usually not a problem.
